Who Killed The Electric Car?

Who killed the electric car. Has anyone seen this movie? Well, I just watched it and this is my long winded blog about it.

Who killed the electric car is a movie about a General Motors car called the EV1 (Electric Vehicle 1), which was launched in approximately 1997, and then taken off the market in 2003. , leaving consumers of this EV1 with no car to drive. When they took the car off the market, they recalled literally every EV1, hand picking them them off the streets. Drivers were told if they didn't give their car back, GM would pursue legal action against them. The drivers were leasers, not owners of the car. The car was not up for purchase.

So the premise of the movie was to basically point fingers in every direction as to who or what was responsible for "killing the electric car." You can imagine the speculative nature of this movie. Was it Big Oil, The Auto Manufactures, The Government aka Bush, Consumers?
Approximately 115 minutes of this movie was spent speculating as to why electric cars are pretty much non existent and the last 5 minutes trying to actually solve this problem. It should have been the other way around. I am sick of movies and people and politicians pointing the finger at everyone else but themselves. It reminds me of MSNBC's poll of the Democratic Debate. When asked about the stance on the war in Iraq, everyone seemed to answer "oh, well I was never for the war in the first place." It doesn’t matter whether or not you voted for or against the initial war in Iraq, the reality is that we are there NOW, and to look to the future of what needs to be done. It also reminds me of the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" (which by the way, I am a fan of), but what should have been left out were the parts where Gore was sort of tooting his own horn about how he's always been such an environmentalist. Gore, I like you, but seriously, I doubt you're a green loving guy when you're being driven around in your Suburban with your fleet of hummers tailing you. Oh, and don't get me started about Oprah, which also I'm a HUGE fan of, but don't let her fool you into thinking she lives "green" just because she had a show about living green. All of these people have the right core message, which is, that something needs to be done. However, no one seems to be actually doing anything about it.

Environmental issues aren't Democrat or Republican. They are real. It's not some conspiracy cooked up by the right wing to make you go out and buy a hummer so their bank account swells (while saying global warming isn't real), and it's not left wing propaganda to turn you into a free loving hippie.

If anyone out there wants any sort of change, this is so cliché but, it must start with you!
At the risk of sounding even more preachy, I'm going to OMIT the "here's what you can do" section of this thesis :) But seriously people, let’s do something. If you need ideas just google anything to do with the environment and you'll find a whole host changes you can make.

I totally agree with your rant about celebrities showcasing 60-minute "living green" segments, and then turning around and pooing all over soapbox with pollution. BUT, the flourescently-bright side is that because of all the publicity "An Inconvenient Truth" has gotten, choosing "green" is becoming more popular, and is slowly, but surely, more convenient for everyday, lazy american consumers, like yours truly. :)
