Buy a cake stand & Make a cake from scratch
Buying a cake stand was easy, the cake not so much.
I made the 14 layer cake from bakerella's site. She makes it look like a breeze. It was NOT.
First of all, do you have any idea how much batter goes into making 14 layers? Granted, the layers were very thin, but still. If I would not have had my trusty kitchen aid mixer I would have been in cake batter up to my eye balls! I even sifted the flour people!
So, I used to think I was a detail person, I mean, I AM a project manager for pete's sake! Now, I'm not so sure because it seems like every time I follow a recipe, I end up messing something up.
So, this is what I messed up. I used condensed milk in the cake batter instead of regular milk. The icing called for condensed milk and I got mixed it up. I also added 3 cups of sugar instead of 2 for the cake batter. So needless to say, the cake turned out to be like 14 giant sugar cookies. Sounds good in theory, but trust, it was NOT good. Then the icing was all wrong. It never set up and it tasted like chocolate syrup, not icing. It was the messiest damn cake known to man. I had chocolate everywhere.
Once I knew the cake was a bust, I thought about stopping, but I'm no quitter (yes I am.)
I finished the cake, it looked horrible. I mean horrible! So bad, that Scott rounded the corner, took one look at it and laughed (it was pretty funny.) I was in the kitchen cussing and huffing and puffing and burning myself with the icing, so Scott came out to see what was going on. Oh, but I finished that sucker, AND displayed it in the cake stand. It tasted like a giant undercooked pancake/sugar cookie with chocolate syrup on it. Yum-O!
It was a BUST!
I managed to get some artsy pictures of it that actually makes it look decent, but if you would have seen the mess in the kitchen, it paints a whole other story. I'll post the pictures once I work up the effort to download them off my camera.

Oh bummer! It's funny because I am just like you: do things from start to finish...no matter the outcome, even if it's disastrous. I saw the post about the 14 layer cake. YUM, but too much work & mess for me, so I admire you for trying it out! I'd like to see the cake stand, though.
you can't win 'em all :)
i can't wait to see the pics.
How could you have come so far in life without making a cake from scratch?? The reason I'm shocked is because I was under the impression your grandfather was a baker or something like that....didn't he come to mutual and teach us how to do cake decorating once?
I have baked a cake from scratch, it's just not something I normally do. Amy I can't believe you remember that. I even forgot that. Yes, my grandpa was a baker, so I sort of got the baking gene. However, baking at 5280 feet is very tricky.
I'm impressed, regardless of the outcome.
Also, I want to see the cake stand. I LOVE cake stands.
I can't wait for the pics! I'm impressed you finished it. When I see that something isn't going the way it's suppose to, I quit. Good job!
