Restaurant
Zest!

November's Restaurant of the month. Scott and I went to Zest last night. We often just drive around until we see something we think may be cool and then go in. Zest is located in one of Phoenix's Gay neighborhoods. Which often mean the coolest and best restaurants in town. Most likely a man-boy will greet you with a lycra sheethed body and shaved arms. It's best to just hug him and declare him your new best friend. Because really, that's what he will become. Zest is on 16th st just North of Indian School. Anyway, the menu... no first the decor.
It's like the bad "modern" decor, ie: plush purple chairs with maple backs and those light fixtures that you'd get from home depot that says. " I have no taste and that's why I'm buying this cheep light fixture from Home Depot that's a brushed chrome." OK maybe that's a little harsh, but it's Home Depot modern meets spanish hacienda, meets faux finished walls meets a french country kitchen. It's very disorenting. The picture showcases the best feature... the candle table.
So once you get past the wierd decor, the rest is amazing. We started out with a goat cheese and shrimp appetizer with rosemary bread. A lot of the dishes seem like the tastes are to much, but they work, they really really work.
I had the Market Seabass - Cilantro seared with tri-colored tostadas layered with peppers, onions, cabbage and oregano scented squash placed atop mango rice and covered with a spicy jack cream sauce. It was divine!
Scott had the Rainbow Trout - Citrus breaded on crab spinach Yukon gratin with an oyster mushroom Vidalia onion sauce and a chive orange aioli with grilled asparagus.
MOVIE
"Trust the Man"

I watched this movie a few days ago. I found this on Netflix by searching for all the movies with Maggie Gyllenhaal. I thought I'd seen all of her movies, but I was wrong. I have a mini girl-crush on Maggie, and her movies are always something I like. This did not dissapoint. It's about 2 couples living in NYC and their relationships. The challenges of marraige and the triumph over hard times. It was an all out chick flick. Scott left the room after about 20 minutes to go play his video games. My only complaint... there were fart jokes, which totally didn't fit the movie, not just one but like 4 or 5. It was a bit jarring, but other than that it was a good movie
MUSIC
Bjork-Volta

So, what can I say about Bjork's semi-new album.... umm well it's super cool. I love her and I love her unique sound. The best song on the Album is Earth Intruders. If you're interested, search in i-Tunes for her. I think ethier you love Bjork or hate her. Enjoy

First, I have to say that Eric and I went to Zest with our neighbor a few weeks ago and we were sorely, sorely disappointed. How can you even want to walk under the burgundy canvas and through those doors when the building looks like it was once an Elks Lodge? We had to go there because our neighbor "treated" us and had reservations. (that's for another blog) Anywho, yes, the decor is wicked-awful, I was perplexed with the french-country open kitchen concept with the velvet and maple chairs. what is goin' on? our entree was pretty good but a little cold and everything tasted like there was way too much orange ZEST. and i love Bjork's music, but think Bjork the person is total crazy-town. I like your "what's what" blogs. keep 'em coming!
love, love that movie. Jeffrey actually liked it too, but i will admit that could be due to his crush on maggie as well. you two should compare notes.
i just wanted to add that we loved the padres mexican cuisine restaurant. it was very, very good. i didn't think it was spanish like you said though... it was definitely mexican. they don't have enchiladas or guacamole or margaritas in spain. anyways, eric had the salmon enchiladas and they were soo tasty and i had the salmon and i really liked it. we'll have to go there together sometime!
i love to read about your personal taste Katy. Keep it up!
